Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Read about our parent and child groups.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. This means that it is related to the development of the brain. Typically, it limits a person’s ability to communicate and relate to other people and is apparent in young children as developmental delay.
ASD is referred to as a spectrum because it ranges from mild to severe. Some children have exceptional abilities and academic success, while others have more serious limitations, such as being non-verbal. Problems with the function of parts of the brain can affect the control of emotions, communication, and body movements. People with autism sometimes may have physical symptoms, including digestive problems such as constipation, which is known to be related to brain function. Some children may have poor coordination of gross motor movement eg. for running and climbing, or fine motor movements. There may be urine control issues, sleep disruption and meltdowns.
A child who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may show some, or all the issues listed in this section of the website. The underlying problem is neurodevelopmental and affects many parts of a child’s brain.
At BrainChild our aim is to help change these limiting issues. We assess your child in order to plan your child’s program, which in turn creates change and allows your wonderful child to shine through.
